I bought the music monitors to use with the laptop that keep in my kitchen. Previously I had used the companion 3 system but chose to move it to my home office because the subwoofer was too bulky for my counter top and wanted to reduce the clutter caused by cables.
The music monitors provide excellent sound for my kitchen, I really enjoy the bose headphones and computer speakers, but don't use bose speakers in my hi-fi or home theater rooms.
These speakers fill the space with good sound but I do miss the deeper bass provided by the companion 3's. Overall, they fill my need for this applicaton, as I expected they would. If space is not a concern for you and you want the best sounding speakers (full range) for less money, I would recommend the companion 3 any day. I have companion 3's installed in both my offices at work and at home.
Overall, very satisfied with this purchase, the remote control is also a nice plus.

Played them beside the Companions they are replacing and all the expense suddenly seems worth it. They are beauties, rock hard, unobtrusive, full sound at the lowest volume, and the bass can sometimes surprise you. Long after i've replaced the gadgets hooked to them, i'll be enjoying these speakers. Hopefully, i'll be convinced, over time, that the extra 100 or 150 bucks i had to pay for them (399 flat at amazon) - what I call the Bose "we're the best and you can't argue with that, so pay up" premium - will be less remembered than the years of great sound that i got out of them. we shall see. i miss the volume knob on the front like my companions had, but i know engineers and designers hate knobs, and they do give you a remote with these speakers, but, nothing is more human than a knob that you don't even have to look at to operate.

For $300 I would easily give these 5 stars. Even for $400 they deserve 4 1/2 stars. Bottom line is you can't get this kind of sound in this small of package from anybody else.
I find the Bose have a bit too much mid-bass. Such as when someone is speaking the voice sounds a little too husky or bassy. I find a lot of Bose products have this characteristic, and I'm not sure it's a defect, just something I don't care for. Other than that the sound is just amazing. The volume will go very loud, loud enough for any situation I can think of. I would say as loud as a large television, but with very clean sound at max volume. The bass for something of this size is incredible. I heard them in the store and was looking all over for a sub-woofer.
I tried some Gigaworks T20 for a couple days, and while the sound was wonderful and more natural sounding than the Bose, they were just a bit too bulky for traveling and my limited desk space. Also the the volume from the Bose is significantly louder than the Gigaworks. The loudness and small size of the Bose make them much better for me. The price you will have to decide for yourself. Also, I'm in an environment with a lot of background noise and I find speech is easier to understand in movies with the Bose.
The push button volume controls are surprisingly responsive and quick to adjust. Some bass and treble adjustments would be nice as well as a headphones jack and 2nd line in. But these things aren't a big problem for me. The remote is cute but I would have preferred the other jacks and adjustments.
